Finding a good bar in another town can be maddening sometimes. What places have Guinness on tap? What places show soccer on TV? Where do I go to watch University of Kentucky in the NCAA Tournament if it is not being shown locally on TV? Where could I go before D.C. United games? After Washington Capitals games? Questions, questions, questions. Hopefully, we have a few answers. |

The first thing to remember about these bar reviews is that places do change-for better or for worse. I recently went back to my old neighborhood, the Fan District, in Richmond, Virginia. All the bars have changed so much that it's hard to recognize them: new management, new waitresses, new bartenders, new decor, new regulars. With that in mind, here are our reviews, starting with our home in Washington, D.C.; then moving out to Richmond, Williamsburg; then on overseas to Brussels, Amsterdam, and Tel Aviv. Dancing Crab/Malt Shop, Babe's Billiards, Four Provinces of Ireland, Flannagan's, Sign of the Whale, Mr. Day's, Capital City Brewery, Big Hunt And the must-visit bar: Brickskeller Richmond, Virginia: Bogart's, the Border, Baja Bean Co., Sidewalk, Mulligan's, Burrito Lounge Williamsburg, Virginia The Green Leafe Cafe, College Delly, Mama Mia's, Paul's-It's a small town; those are the bars Brussels J.J.'s, Wild Geese, O'Neill's, Petite Florence Bremen, Germany Hagerty's, Oblomow Tel Aviv Gordon Hostel, Gordon Inn, Buzz Stop, Down South Pub That's it for now. As I venture to new bars, I'll post my reports here. And if you find a new place, or want to relate an old one, let me know: email me. |
