Our History Our Name: Tenleytown Celtic Tenleytown. We are named for the part of Washington, D.C. where most of our players live. Though we have no idea who Tenley was (if ever he was), we do know that metro stop up the hill: Tenleytown-A.U. station. Celtic.Celtic is the name taken from the great team in Glasgow. Our team is as diverse as theirs: we've got Colin McDermott, they've got Colin Healy; we've got A.U. Park, they've got Celtic Park; they've got an Israeli player, Eyal Berkovic, we've got Joshua Katz; they've had injury problems this season, some of us are injured and/or out of shape. Celtic were the first British side to win the Champions' League trophy in 1967 over Inter Milan, have won numerous league trophies (including last year's CIS Millenium Cup), and represent a proud tradition. We only hope to live up to the great name Celtic. Why black and red, rather than Green and White; why Kelme and not Umbro? Tough question. When deciding on colors, Alex Lasher and I began with what we could not wear. My stipulations were no blue, no orange, no Nike. His were no green, no purple, no yellow. We came down to a compromise: black and red. Black is the color of anarchism; red for revolution. Not exactly what we intended, mind you, but it sounds nice. Finally, we chose Kelme because of the classic look their jerseys had and, perhaps mainly, for the price. Our first choice was Lotto-black jerseys with white sleeves to go with the red numbers. Not available. Our team began playing several years ago in American University's intramural leagues, both outdoor seven-on-seven and indoor five-on-five. We put together teams who were highly competitive. In the last two years, our teams made it to the playoffs for both formats. In 1999 our indoor team finished league tourney after making it to the semi-finals. The 2000 indoor team, Deviled, finished third in the tournament. So many of our players are A.U. students that we are almost certain to enter teams again this coming academic year. We first entered WISL as a Gemstone Division team in spring 2000. As mentioned above, our team is composed of many graduate students at A.U. Joshua Katz and Alex Lasher decided in fall 1999 to enter a team in a league. Through personal contacts we have put together a 20-member team. Friends, new and old, and fraternity brothers from University and Virginia and William and Mary shore up the team. Our first season was quite an experience at 0-1-8, the 8 being losses, unfortunately. We demonstrated that we had the players to win, but had problems getting everyone to the game. With players out for injuries, law review, going overseas, it was difficult to field a team at times. Once, we had to forfeit a game. Nevertheless, we were all ecstatic at being able to play in an organized league with referees, real uniforms, lines, nets, the works. We were relegated from the Diamond Division (equivalent to a Second Division in the league behind Premier and First Divisions) only in week 8 out of 9. This fall, we return to the league ready to take on the challenge of fighting our way back up. We are sure that once we feel comfortable playing together that we will find the back of the opponents' nets and form a good, solid side. |
