Here's where you go to find out what's going on about the world of soccer. Well, as much news as I can gather. At the moment, I am living in soccer hog-heaven (sort of). Two nights ago, I got to watch Ulm v. Arminia Bielefeld in the Bundesliga 2 (Bielefeld 1 - 0 Ulm); last night, Hamburger SV 0 - 0 Bröndy Copenhagen in Champions League qualifications (2:0 in aggregate); and tonight, also in Champions League qualifications, 1860 München v. Leeds Utd. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I get this position in München so that I can stay here in Germany and continue to be able to watch live Fußball. Otherwise, it's back to the good ole USA, where even the national team rarely warrants a national audience. If you are in Washington, DC-as I was-here's my advice to get your fix. At home, on basic District Cablevision channel 24, you get WNVC, International Public Television. They show (horribly delayed) Bundesliga at 8 p.m. on Friday nights, Chilean futbol at 5 p.m. on Saturdays, Italian Serie A at 3 p.m. Sundays, another Bundesliga match at 5 p.m. on Sundays, and Argentinian futbol at 8 p.m. on Tuesday nights-followed by Futbol Mundiale. (Plus, WNVC shows Australian Rules Football at 8 or 9 p.m. on Mondays, as Free knows.) Then, you also get on channel 36 Lionel Bienvenue's two-hour (English) Premier League highlights on Mondays at about 1 or 2 p.m. Not much pickings, eh? Otherwise, there are bars that show matches. The DC Celtic Supporters Clubshows Celtic games most weeks at Flanagan's in Bethesda, $10 live, $5 taped. Grab a Guinness at 10 a.m. on a Saturday and watch the Hoops kick ass. Also, I watched the FA Cup, Chelsea v. Villa at Summer's over in Arlington. I also believe that Capital Lounge (Penn. Ave.) shows English Premier matches. We also got the lovely people at Babe's Billiards to tune into a DC United game last June-we had DC Utd. on one TV above another with the Colorado Avalanche. Oh, and they serve on tap Guinness, Sam Adams, Miller or Bud, and a few others. What fun! The second section is for the English Premier League. I've got my favorites-West Ham, Everton-others on the team have theirs-Manchester City, Arsenal. And you probably have your own. Here, check out how the league is shaping up, now going into its second frame with big surprises like Manchester United drawing at Ipswich Town. Also, check out how my fantasyleague.com Premiership team is doing (right now 5th out of 10 teams within the division). The third concerns the Bundesliga, one of the top leagues in the world. On these pages right now, I have my forecast for Werder Bremen. Also included are links to the Werder homepage, to the second-division Rot-Weiß Oberhausen homepage, and to the mighty F.C. Sachsen-Leipzig (the third-division team that defeated Celtic in July). Coming soon will be a link to F.C. St. Pauli of Hamburg, the real team in Hamburg, as they say. They're my pick for promotion early on here. Not a hard guess, given that they are currently in first place with a goal differential of +11 after two games. Further, I have my critique of the new uniforms, or Tricots as they're called here. How can every team use the same uniform-that red (or blue) simple adidas set. Of major teams around the world, I believe that Bayern has easily one of the ugliest uniforms in the world. There are teams in the Bundesliga that are even uglier. Also I have here a link to current Bundesliga 1 and 2 results and tables. |
