Latest News The Return of the Tenley Celts Our next task will be to fight it out in our new division, the Opal Division-kind name for the bottom division in the league. Most people would think that last season's campaign would have been a nightmare: 0 wins, 8 losses, and 1 draw, a goal differential of what -37 or so? The response after the end of last term showed otherwise. Many of our team members want to return to the team, relegated or not. Although a few more wins would have been nice, we had fun and made new friendships on the pitch. Plus, we got to play a number of matches next to the Lincoln Memorial and in view of the Washington Monument, including one during the Millenium March and two during Memorial Day Weekend (we had to forfeit one, if you don't remember). We should remember that our league is one of the toughest on the East Coast. This coming season offers new challenges. If they stay in the league, there were three other teams with a goal differential worse than ours who will be joining us in the Opal Division. That means we better get some wins. We know we are a better team than our record suggests. I'm sure we doubtless will do well! Life at AU Park has been hectic. Team Manager Joshua Katz moved over to Rotenburg-Wümme, Germany, in June; and Assistant Manager Alex Lasher is too busy with law school to take over. With many players' numerous commitments to law review and law school, or to the practice of law, it appeared doubtful that we could field a team-especially considering we had one forfeit (with fewer than 7 players), started one game with 8 players, started two others with ten, and had only one sub in one game. That's more than half our games. Into the vacancies have stepped Jeff Bourne and Alex Veitch, both of the Sierra Club in Washington. So, suddenly, Tenleytown Celtic is being led by two guys who don't live in Tenley. No matter, their enthusiasm for the club more than makes up for it. To them, we say Hail!, wish them best of luck, and bid them thanks. If I forget someone, please forgive. On behalf of the team, I wanted to send out congratulations to our team members who have made Law Review at Washington College of Law, American University. Jeff Bomba, Nishan Kottahachchi, and Steve Montgomery received this impressive honor this past spring. Although they had to miss a few games, we all know how much more important law review is than amateur football. Besides them, Luis Clavijo, Pedro Cortes, Oscar Gonzalez, and Alex Lasher just finished their first year at the law school, a tough task indeed. Since there have been no games recently, there is nothing to report on that end. If you want to see how we fared last term, see our Results and Fixtures section. If you have any news at all to report to other people on the team, as always, email me at leftyjoska@netscape.net to post it. |
