Predictions for 2000/2001

Ok, so as of today, 26 July 2000, these are only my own predictions. Do NOT use these as any sort of informed analysis. Hopefully soon we will be getting more input from others. If you think I'm off my head with these picks, email me your own at Tenleytown Celtic

Scottish Premier League:
Champions:
Celtic : Ok, so they have problems in defence. New Manager Martin O'Neill will become one of the tops in the world with a League Championship and...is it too soon for a UEFA Cup Championship? Larsson is going to return to form, Berkovic and Sutton are going to prove their worth and more, Petrov will emerge as a superstar, new Bhoy Joos Valgaeren is going to shore up an otherwise suspect defence. And if Neil Lennon comes over from Leicester City to rejoin his manager and fellow Irishman O'Neill, Celtic will have the ammunition to overtake the Huns. Keep your fingers crossed: they need it.

Second: Huns. Look for them to crash out in the first round of the Champions League and then the UEFA Cup, too. How could anyone like these guys?
Third: Dundee United
Fourth: Hearts. Fourth place and a UEFA Cup Qualifying position, despite cut-backs.
Fifth and onward: Who knows, but does anyone understand the new league format?

English Premier League:

Champions:
Arsenal: I believe Henry was the best player on France's Euro2K team this summer. He will carry that form for Arsenal this season. With new signings, too, they will finally unseat Man U.

Second: Manchester United: They still could take the League. Barthez really is that good. And I love to hate Scholes-if only he were playing elsewhere.

Third: Leeds Utd.: Again, hate to put them up here, but Viduka was a key signing for them.

Fifth: Sunderland. Super Kev, Quinn, and Hutchison. If Super Kev's goals go down, these two will benefit considerably.

Sixth: Liverpool. Seventh:
Everton : Here, it's a bit of patriotism. I'm pulling for Joe-Max Moore to show how far players from the USA have come. Everton fans were critical of the signing with comments like, 'What the hell is an MVP?', and a few other digs at MLS and the US National Team. In a span of seven appearances just after the break, he scored something like six goals. That shut them up. Sure, Everton lost to Dundee United in a friendly, 2-1. But, Gascoigne is going to show how great he is-even after years of drinking, getting fat, and getting into fights. If not for his three-year stint with the Huns, I might have suggested he be considered an honorary Sig Ep. So many ex-Huns-makes me wonder.

Eighth through Eleventh: Some combination of Chelsea, Villa, and
West Ham United : As for West Ham-German Third Division side Sachsen Leipzig could beat Celtic 2-0. West Ham lost 2-1. My heart is with the Hammers, Billy Bragg's team and a team with connections to Celtic, but I think I'm giving them more credit even with this pick.

Twelfth, Thirteenth and on: Newcastle Utd., Tottenham Hotspur.

Relegation: Leicester City, Carlton Athletic, and Ipswich Town: Yes, and
Manchester City will stay up!

Bundesliga

This one's tougher, especially since we get almost no news in English, but ignorance will certainly not prevent my offering picks!

Champions: Hertha Berlin: Beinlich was a tremendous signing. Their defence handled Präger, Yeboah, and co. from Hamburg (H.S.V.) with little or no problems twice, once in a meaningless friendly tourney in Austria and again in the German League Cup a couple days ago. Watch for Deisler, too. And one of my favorites on the team, Iranian Ali Daie is great.

Second: 1860 München. The Lions are reloaded for another assault on their rivals across town. Big test tomorrow tonight (27.07.00) against F.C. Kaiserslautern. Ok, it's a few days later. FCK beat the Lions-I think, I was working on my resume during the second half. In any case, the Lions will come through.
Third: But how far down can I reasonable put Bayern? If I had any say in it, they'd drop further. They still easily could repeat and could make it to the Champions' League finals.
Fourth: How far down could Bayer reasonably drop? Despite their owners, you've got to tip your hat to the (very) young American, Donovan. How old is he, like 17?
Fifth:
Werder Bremen : Werder looked shaky in their pre-season friendlies against Hansa rival H.S.V. and Unterhaching (!), but should be back strong with their new tops. They were running for a time in fourth place last season and have only strengthened their team (on paper) from last season, a team that made it to the Round of Eight in the UEFA Cup, where they lost admirably to Arsenal.
Sixth: H.S.V. They have lost quite a few players-Gravesen to Everton, for instance-but they've still got Roy Präger and Hans Jörg Butt, two players I love to watch.
Seventh: F.C. Kaiserslautern.
Eighth through Tenth: Borussia Dortmund, a team that's gone through some troubles; Stuttgart, a team who drew in Intertoto against Standard Liege, a team whose uniforms had no team badge and no sponsor (!? Their uniforms looked like they could be from WISL even); Nürnberg, who return to Bundesliga 1.
Eleventh through Thirteenth: Freiburg, Unterhaching, F.C. Köln. Relegation Zone: Energie Cottbus, Schalke 04, Hansa Rostock, and any other team I've forgotten.

Serie A

If you thought I didn't know what I was talking about with the Bundesliga...It's frightening how much money these guys can throw at players.

Champions: Juventus. Cheaters Never Prosper; except, these ones will. Zidane, Zidane, and Del Piero. Oh, and Zidane. Even though I thought Henry proved the more dangerous player overall for France, Zidane is about the equal of any player. An aside: I think that Edgar Davids is one of the most over-rated players in the world-along with that punter Beckham. Both are cry-babies. Send them up north to Scotland; they wouldn't survive in a league where you've got to be tough and strong. Davids (and Beckham): you brush up against them, and they go flying.
Second:
A.S. Roma . (See what I mean by my not knowing about the league?) Totti is fabulous. One of my favorites to watch from E2K. And I love any team with the guts to wear Maroon and Orange-Go Hokies! They are the only team in Rome. LATE-BREAKING NEWS: Roberto just signed with Roma for close to $21 Million from Bayer Leverkusen.
Third: A.C. Milan.
Fourth: Inter. Right name, wrong colors.
Fifth: Fiorentina. They've got Nuno Gomes, the player who struck that fabulous goal against France in the Semi-Finals. Barthez had no shot at it.
Sixth: Parma
Seventh: Lazio. Cheaters Never Prosper. And if the rest of the league were any good, I would have placed them further down. I do like Ravenelli, though. He'd make it in Scotland. They looked less than impressive against Bayer last night in a friendly.
The Rest.

If you are offended by my picks. Good. Email me at leftyjoska@netscape.net and tell me how wrong I am. I'll post your comments then on the Opinions Page. Remember: I am making these predictions in July. I also was rushing them to get them in before today's kickoff of the SPL.
